Why BATS ?

Good Morning Everyone ... hope you all got a good rest ... so 2013 is just around the corner and BA is pretty sure everyone is excited in welcoming the new year ... and so are we here at Broadway Academy Talent School (BATS) with our January intake. We have been shouting out on our Facebook and Twitter, and also flyers have been sent out and banners are up as well. Hope our banner is not playing Where's Wally with you out there.

So here we go , our January 2013 intake is already open for registrations, with 4 levels of show choir classes, and we have drama classes , broadway dance class and also musical theater. BATS is also having elementary musical theater and children's show choir for kids. Start young , thats the spirit and trust us, it really helps your child develop.

Lets talk about our courses, as our name itself says it "Broadway" , our programs are designed more towards the American way of education whereby we focus on "skills" learned rather than just a certificate. We all know the case where everyone has a certificate but to actually do the job at hand is a whole different story. That is the point that we want to stress here at Broadway Academy, its not just about hanging a nice certificate on the wall, but actually perform and be a performer. Of course if someone walks in and says "i wanna learn singing or and instrument and I want to go through certification for it" - we can arrange for that. But we want you to learn things with the fun element and  not being "stress" - "oh no .. i have 2 more weeks to my test , what if I don't make it " - its no fun it that line keeps bugging you and every time you come for lessons, its stressful. Right ? ? ?

Lets take our vocal lessons for example, we have levels that the student have to go through and at the end of each period the students will have to do a mini recital or performance. And BATS will have a panel there at the end of the show to see how far the student has progressed and to see if he/she is able to cope to the next level. Don't worry, you wont have judges like in those competitions who will put you down and say " You can't sing to save your life " - No....... Its more of them giving their opinions and views to the student. Then we proceed to see if they proceed to the next level and what needs to be fixed. So that's how it works.

Next question .... " but i don't want to perform , i'm scared ... ". This is the next important step that BATS want all their students to be good at , being a performer. You may think that being a performer is merely performing on stage, that's not true. When you perform on stage - you actually gain a lot besides performing. Just standing on stage facing the audience - you have enough courage to face audience - stage fright gone - confident level increases. Then performing on stage - you concentration and focus level increases - don't think singing out lyrics and audience interaction is easy - its not. These are among the points that we want our students to have. And these skills will also be useful outside of the performing arts arena.

So ... think about it. And remember our January 2013 intake is open for registrations, dont forget to call us at 03- 6142 2601 or email us at batsinfo@broadwayacademy.asia if you have any questions. See you there !!!

PS: Also a lot of our students have had chances to perform in events and be a real performer. :)

BA Recital Studio - Open now

Photobucket
Here we go again ... another new announcement everyone ... gather round

Broadway Academy Recital Studio is now open ... finally we have a recital studio. Officially used first time for the Kate Sadler Choir Workshop and Vocal Masterclass... its really exciting for us to have this recital studio.

Its located at Level 1. Lets see what we have in this recital studio 1 ) The stage area is 15 ft (wide) x 18 ft (depth) fitted with a baby grand piano (movable) and a drum-set. 2 ) We have a stage wing of 8 ft (wide) x 18 ft (depth) which can be used as a changing room or to store minimal sets / props during the show and of course a waiting area for performers. The Stage and Stage Wing is divided by curtains, so, if you want your audience to see it all, then with just a pull, its done. So stage area and stage wing done. The recital studio space is able to accommodate up to 100 pax or banquet chairs. Not bad rite??? And besides that if you don't want the chairs but instead some cocktail tables, that can be arranged. So, all is said about the space? No ... forgot something, there is a mini-bar counter area, for those who want to serve refreshments. And I guess we don't have to mention about toilets (of course there are toilets).

Front View of the Stage Area

The Roland Digital Baby Grand and drum set ( both movable )

The left side black curtain divides the changing room and stage area

Mini bar-counter area

So, that is the stage and recital space, lets talk about equipment's. Having a Production and Event division is not that bad at all. The recital hall can be equip with a complete PA System , we have a 48 Channel Digital Mixer which is definitely sufficient and for speakers, our Roland speakers will do the job. Mind you its not a stadium, its a recital studio for 100 pax. : ) . We also have back-lines  Mikes .. yes this is the interesting part, we come complete with wireless and wired hand-held mics and we also have a range of lapel or clip mikes for you to choose from ranging from DPA's to local brands. So there we go , sound is complete. Lighting are currently down lights but moving on, we are looking into LED par cans. For instruments, if you need keyboards, percussion, we have a range of percussion items that you can choose from.

Well, I guess the above pretty much explains everything from the recital space to the equipment. There is quite alot that can be done here. Recitals of course, mini performances eg small concerts , live band ( to those who want to introduce their bands ), gatherings, seminars... all these can be done. Just drop by to have a look at the venue first , give us at all 03 - 6142 2601 to make appointment and we will do our very best to assist you with what you need.

And last but not least, the price or rate card right ? Its coming out soon. So keep a close watch and we will put it up very very soon. Till then, cheers.

PS: We will load up some videos , so stay tune to our YouTube channel.

Moving on from 2012 to 2013 with BATS International Series 2013

Merry Christmas Everyone & a Happy New Year ...

So the year is coming to an end, just a few days to go before we hit into 2012. It has been a very interesting year as well for everyone at Broadway Academy.

In 2012 the Broadway Academy Talent School has geared up of a exciting classes, workshops and camps. Lets just take a minute to look back at what BATS has done in 2012. We had 3 levels of Show Choir group classes , the numbers are definitely picking up as well as the standard of the performers. We saw a lot of difference in the Freshman group going on to the Sophomore, more exciting choreography and people were getting more comfortable on stage projecting their voices and can be heard. Not only show choir, but the drama class has also gotten more attention which we will share more later on. On the other hand, the dance class has been doing some very beautiful Bollywood dance steps where the students have really enjoyed their term. That's just for classes, BATS also did a 8 days Show Choir camp in Suria, Cherating and the participants put up a very good show at the end of the 8 days, some questioned is it possible to do so??? Well, i guess question answered !! YES WE DID!. Besides that, BATS also played host to students from St. Andrews Singapore for a 1 day Drama Workshop and you bet it the students had alot of fun. And just a  week back, we had Kate Sadler a very well known vocal tutor and coach all the way from Melbourne was down in Broadway Academy for a Choir Workshop and Vocal Masterclass. To BATS, this is something we  were really looking forward to because there was so much that they could learn from Kate having led her VoxSynergy Choir as Champions, you can't go wrong learning from the best.

This leads us to BATS's International Calendar 2013, we have installed a very exciting line-up and will be having very experienced and talented people coming down here to share their experience and to learn from them. This is one way that BATS can contribute to the performing arts society, we must all be open to learn in order to improve ourselves. Of course costing is something that we cant push aside unless we really have corporate body who is willing to support the programs. We note however that some mentioned the costings are high, but rather look at it as - its cheaper for everyone to chip in and get someone down here rather than 1 person flying off for a lesson - right ? flight , accomodation , expenditure + classes , do the math : ) ... and with the talents and people that BATS have , its definitely worth learning from them.

So for 2013, we have a very exciting line up of guest artiste coming down from vocal to musical theater and we are talking people who are currently on Broadway !!!, isn't that exciting ??? And as usual, we always have our Earlybird and Fan Club discount available for our loyal supporters. So, we will be releasing the calendar very soon , sometime in mid January so stay tuned for more info. Like our Facebook page at Broadway Academy and follow us on @broadwayacademy as the announcement goes out fastest there. We guarantee its going to be great.

So see you there !!!

Cheers Everyone

Broadway Academy and Education

“I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning”, Plato once wrote.

At Broadway Academy, we hold the same belief and strive to cultivate young minds through performing arts. The classes that we provide, namely Show Choir, Drama, and Broadway Dancing, stimulate children’s artistic senses and guide them to express themselves using theatrical methods. We encourage them to think outside the box and exercise their creativity on stage, which will allow them to open their minds to the possibility and wonders of performing arts. And with the rhythms and songs of the theatre world imbued in them, children are better suited to keep up with the pace of the society around them as the lessons here help them to learn in their own ways.

We also advocate the same values in the workshops and camps that we conduct. In the recent SPARKS Show Choir Camp that Broadway Academy organized, the participants received lessons on vocal techniques, proper breathing methods, incorporating dance moves to the beat of the songs, the essence of singing in an ensemble, and the art of performing as a choir. Music technicalities aside, the camp saw to it that the participants were equipped with the knowledge and ability of learning smart. It was a belief of Plato that children should be taught in ways that amuse them and induce fun to help them pick things up faster.

Our theatrical games highlighted the importance of interaction between the students on and off stage as that strengthened not only their social skills, but also their ensemble sense.  This is a crucial tool as they will be required to engage in many forms of group work throughout their school and work life.

The SPARKS Show Choir Camp, as well as the other classes we offer, aimed to educate its participants in the relationship between performing arts and other fields, and encourage them to apply the lessons learned in their daily lives.

And Broadway Academy is appreciative of the support that we have received. In relation to this, we are glad to share with you an article written by the REAL International School, regarding one of its students from the Suria campus, who participated in the SPARKS Show Choir Camp: http://realschools.edu.my/news_details.php?news_id=70&id=46

Broadway Academy enjoys educating children and adults alike in performing arts, and hopes to establish this field in the bubbling cauldron of Malaysian cultures.

Where young stars shine

Hello, boys and girls! It had been a sparkling week of music and fun and sunshine at the Sparks Show Choir Camp! The participants had rocked out to Tribute to Queen, kicked their way through It’s a Hard-knock Life, belted Defying Gravity, and swayed to What a Wonderful World, all in just SIX days! Well done, Sparkies! We are so proud of you!

Now, these participants are able to say that they were part of Malaysia’s FIRST show choir camp!

With the guidance of vocal coaches Mr. Casey Koh and Ms. Annmarie, and choreographer Ms. Natasha, the participants have learnt about singing techniques, music theory, performing as a show choir, theatrical elements and coordinating tough dance moves with singing. Of course, it was not all workshops and rehearsals; there were also lots and lots of telematches and theatrical games to keep the fun buzzing!

Here’s a glimpse of what these youngsters had been up to in Cherating:

If you have missed out on this Sparks Show Choir Camp, do not worry! We will be organizing another exciting show choir camp later this year! So do drop by the blog from time to time as we will be keeping you updated here, or you can follow us on twitter and our Facebook page at Broadway Academy (M) Sdn. Bhd.
