What is Show Choir?

You may have heard of the word show choir from the popular TV series "GLEE". Or you may have seen some posters or promotion by Broadway Academy regarding this said class. But do you know what is show choir?

Catchy arrangements. Synchronized dance moves. Melodies and harmonies drilled to perfection. Maybe a mash up or two. This is the world of show choir today. A long-standing tradition in the U.S, but a very young and fresh concept in Malaysia.

Simplest way to explain it is that it is the basics to Musical Theater. Being in a Show Choir trains you to became a Triple Threat - to be able to Sing, Dance and Act. Unlike the traditional choir or a concert choir which usually do simple or no choreography/movement or steps , Show Choir involves a full on choreography sometimes based on specific story or theme. And yes, these people are also required to be able to sing just as good (or even better) as the traditional choir group.

Performers have to work together to blend harmonies, not only in song but also in tightly choreographed movement. But more important than the performance is the process: the experience of participating in show choir raises self-confidence and encourages teamwork.

Show choir traces its origins as an activity in the United States to the mid-1960s, though cultural historians have been unable to determine the date and location of the first “true” show choir group. Two groups of touring performers, starting with The Young Americans in 1962 and followed by Up with People in 1968, traveled extensively throughout the country in the 1960s and 1970s, performing what could be called the show choir concept. When students and directors of the day saw these organizations, they would, in turn, start similar groups at their high schools.

Broadway Academy had been running this energetic, fun and vibrant program for more than 5 years. Through it all, we have produced more than a dozen showcases, each with it's unique theme and story. The syllabus and methodology behind our teaching at Broadway Academy is heavily influenced by the vibrant culture in America. Our program is devised based on the FAME Show Choir curriculum and we aim to train students to become triple threats. Our students are exposed to a wide repertoire of songs ranging from Classical Choir piece, Jazz, Broadway, Pop and many more.

Currently we are recruiting more energetic team members for this group. Registration is open for age 13 to 25 years old. Our current session is on Saturdays at 1:30pm to 3:00pm.

Broadway Academy Talent School (BATS) provides comprehensive vocal training based on the Estill Voice Module that focuses on reaching your vocal goals effectively and safely.

Students at BATS are encourage to sing and perform for an audience. As part of our added value program, we present our students with opportunities to perform in our monthly recitals and showcase. Students will also learn in our Masterclass session where we encourage students to perform in front of the class.

BA Recital Studio - Open now

Here we go again ... another new announcement everyone ... gather round

Broadway Academy Recital Studio is now open ... finally we have a recital studio. Officially used first time for the Kate Sadler Choir Workshop and Vocal Masterclass... its really exciting for us to have this recital studio.

Its located at Level 1. Lets see what we have in this recital studio 1 ) The stage area is 15 ft (wide) x 18 ft (depth) fitted with a baby grand piano (movable) and a drum-set. 2 ) We have a stage wing of 8 ft (wide) x 18 ft (depth) which can be used as a changing room or to store minimal sets / props during the show and of course a waiting area for performers. The Stage and Stage Wing is divided by curtains, so, if you want your audience to see it all, then with just a pull, its done. So stage area and stage wing done. The recital studio space is able to accommodate up to 100 pax or banquet chairs. Not bad rite??? And besides that if you don't want the chairs but instead some cocktail tables, that can be arranged. So, all is said about the space? No ... forgot something, there is a mini-bar counter area, for those who want to serve refreshments. And I guess we don't have to mention about toilets (of course there are toilets).

So, that is the stage and recital space, lets talk about equipment's. Having a Production and Event division is not that bad at all. The recital hall can be equip with a complete PA System , we have a 48 Channel Digital Mixer which is definitely sufficient and for speakers, our Roland speakers will do the job. Mind you its not a stadium, its a recital studio for 100 pax. : ) . We also have back-lines  Mikes .. yes this is the interesting part, we come complete with wireless and wired hand-held mics and we also have a range of lapel or clip mikes for you to choose from ranging from DPA's to local brands. So there we go , sound is complete. Lighting are currently down lights but moving on, we are looking into LED par cans. For instruments, if you need keyboards, percussion, we have a range of percussion items that you can choose from.

Well, I guess the above pretty much explains everything from the recital space to the equipment. There is quite alot that can be done here. Recitals of course, mini performances eg small concerts , live band ( to those who want to introduce their bands ), gatherings, seminars... all these can be done.
